EAST BOHEMIA

One of the most beautiful and very attractive region for tourists in Bohemia is certainly the Orlické Mountains foot. The wild area, covered with impenetrable forests along Bohemia's northwest borderline had been void of permanent settlements practically until the 13th century when the Benedictines founded monasterys in Police nad Metují and Broumov, and colonized the land in their vicinity. Most of the population in the region, particularly in its northern part, came in the colonization era from German-speaking lands. A little later were built Gothical castles at key points which were rebuilt over the time and which you can see even today.
