THE CHARMS OF MORAVIA
A region associated with the best wine, charming folk songs and dulcimer music, where Nature's
colors are reflected in beautiful folk attires and painted pottery, and a multi-colored countryside
in picturesque relievo. Lovers of good food and drink easily forget all their troubles in the wine
cellars of Moravian-Slovakian borderland. Everybody is caught up in the joyful mood generated by the
music, songs and folk dances at numerous folklore festivals. Tourist shall be fascinated by superb
Renaissance architecture of urban reserve areas, impressive castles, beautiful chateaux and rich
collections they house, fairy-tale caves and gorges, and the famous battlefield of Austerlitz where
Napoleon won the Battle of Three Emperors in 1805.
Itinerary
1st day: Arrival in Olomouc, accommodation, sightseeing in the afternoon
2nd day: Morning - excursion to Bouzov Castle, tour of Javoříčko Caves in the afternoon
3rd day: Excursion to Rožnov pod Radhoštěm (75 km), visit to Valachia Museum (Skansen); the tour continues to Brno (Moravia's capital), accommodation
4th day: Sightseeing of Brno, excursion to Macocha Gorge, a tour of the caves (20 km)
5th day: Excursion to Buchlov Castle and Buchlovice Chateau (70 km); a tour of Velehrad Pilgrimage Site

BOUZOV - CASTLE
The castle was built in early 14th century. In 1699 it became the property of the German Knights' Order.
After a reconstruction performed between 1896 and 1901, the castle became a romantic summer resort
of Archduke E. Habsburg, the Master Superior of the Order. After the dissolution of the Order, the
castle was sequestrated by the Nazis and a portion of its collections were stolen. Romantic interiors
adorned with Neo-Gothic decorations contain objets d'art collected by Order members.

BUCHLOV - CASTLE
A royal castle dating from the 1st half of the 13th century, gradually extended and modified
mostly in the 1490s. Its interiors were modified in Baroque style in the 2nd half of the 17th
and in the 18th century. From 1800 to 1945, the castle was the property of the Berchthold clan.
Historical interiors with valuable art collections, dating from 14th to 19th century.

ŠTERNBERK - CASTLE
The castle, built in the 2nd half of the 13th century, was rebuilt in Romantic style after 1886.
Historical interiors housing valuable art collections. An exhibition of medieval artifacts from
Olomouc region is displayed in the castle chapel, with remnants of Gothic frescos. Exhibition of clocks.

MACOCHA, Moravian Karst
Not far from Brno is located the world-famous Moravian Karst. Its area covers approx. 120 sq.km.
There may be found typical karst phenomena - canyons, gorges, approx. 400 larger and smaller caves,
subterranean rivers, etc. The best-known among these rivers is the Punkva. Many localities are
categorized as separate natural reserves. The most interesting and renowned are the Punkva Cave
with Macocha Chasm, Catherine Cave, Balcarka Cave and others. Catherine Cave is the largest of the Karst.
Macocha Chasm is a large, 138.5 m deep gorge in the northern part of the Moravian Karst. Visitors may see
the Chasm's bottom when visiting Punkva Caves or looking down the Upper or Lower Bridge.
Punkva Caves: There is an easy entrance at the eastern wall of the Deserted Valley Canyon. The way
leads through stalactite caves down to the 138.5 m deep Macocha Chasm, followed by a romantic cruise
on punts on the subterranean river Punkva. The total length of Punkva Caves is 3 km.

JAVOŘÍČKO
The Moravian Lidice. The village was raided by an SS commando unit on May 5, 1945, and,
as retaliation for alleged help to guerillas, destroyed in a barbarian way. 38 men aged
15 to 80 were killed, the village itself burnt down with ignition bombs and panzerfausts.
Over the victims' common grave was erected a monument by sculptor J. Tříska and architects
M. Putna and J. Coufal after the war. In Javoříčko's vicinity, in the limestone hill Špránek
are located renowned grottos which used to be inhabited by Cro-Magnon man.

SVATÝ KOPEČEK - HOLY HILL
A pilgrimage resort situated just a few kilometers from Olomouc. The first church was founded by
Olomouc merchant Jan Andrýsek during the Thirty-Year War on the land owned by Premonstrate monks
of Hradisko by Olomouc. These erected a new church in 1666-1679, which lodges a relievo picture of
Our Lady mounted into a silver case.

VELEHRAD
Originally a Cistercian monastery, founded in 1205. During Hussite Wars seriously damaged,
and the monks moved to Uherské Hradiště. The monastery was deserted until the 17th century
when the reconstruction works started. Pope John Paul II paid visit to the monastery in 1990.
There are remnants of a 13th century late Romanesque basilica on the premises.

SLAVKOV U BRNA (AUSTERLITZ)
The township became renowned by Napoleon's victory over allied Russian and Austrian armies in the
famous "Battle of Three Emperors" on December 2, 1805. Napoleon was hosted at the chateau in the period
of December 3-7, 1805, where the truce was signed on December 6.
Baroque chateau built around 1700 and extended in mid-18th century. The chateau's interior contains
a picture gallery and a museum of Napoleonic wars.
